Distribution And Drug Resistance Profile Of Pathogenic Bacterium Isolated From Pediatric Wound Infections Following The 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake
Xu, F.
Background and aims: Distribution and drug resistance profile of pathogenic bacterium isolated from pediatric wound infections following the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.
Aims: May 12, 2008, Wenchuan earthquake occurred in Sichuan, China. Within 1 month after the earthquake, 98 earthquakes injured children were admitted to Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University hospital.
Methods: According to clinical manifestations, 50 cases were diagnosed as wound infection. Wound secretions were put into bacterial culture. Pathogens were isolated and identified. The pathogen distribution and drug resistance were analyzed.
Results: The pathogens were successfully isolated and cultured in 31 cases, the positive rate of 62%; 21 cases were mixed infections, accounting for 68%; Total 99 pathogens were isolated. Gram-positive bacteria were 16 (16%); Gram-negative bacteria were 81 (82%). The distribution of pathogens isolated within one month after the earthquake were different with pathogens distribution of 546 cases 1 year before in general hospital. The pathogen distribution 1 month after the earthquake was Acinetobacter baumannii (27%), Enterobacter cloacae (18%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (13%). The pathogens distribution one year before was Escherichia coli (27%), Staphylococcus aureus (23%) and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (9%). Drug-resistant bacteria isolated rates were higher compared with general hospitalized cases.
Conclusions: In earthquake injured cases, isolation rate of resistant Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-producing extended spectrum β-lactamase of Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae were higher than before the earthquake common cases. Drug-resistant and pan-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolation rate was higher than cases before the earthquake. The changes of pathogen spectrum and drug resistant pathogen spectrum will provide the basis for the emergency treatment after earthquake.
